Clamps 101

October 2019

Did you know that nearly every car made in the world has more than 20 NORMA Group products helping keep the vehicle in excellent working condition? We also have literally thousands of parts for other applications as well – from ships to airplanes to washing machines. Let’s take a look at the most common types of clamps used across different industries today:

Hose Clamps

With spring-loaded T-Bolts, perforated hose clamps, embossed clamps and worm drives, NORMA offers the most complete line of ‘better than original’ quality hose clamps with durable corrosion resistant steel for use in transportation, aircraft, agriculture and industrial applications.

Worm Drive Hose Clamps

There are many variations of the typical hose clamp depending on the intended use. Let’s start with the most common: the worm drive hose clamp (WDHC). It’s called a worm drive clamp because of the way the screw tightens the clamp. These are sold under the BREEZE and Torca brands at NORMA and they are extremely versatile.

Advantages:

  • Stainless steel design
  • 3-piece and 4-piece construction options
  • Smooth or stamped inside for band protection
  • Broad diameter range

Applications:

  • Passenger vehicle
  • Commercial vehicle
  • Industrial
  • White goods

T-Bolt Clamps

Next is the T-Bolt hose clamp. These clamps are built tough for extreme use and are frequently found in heavy-duty applications like turbo charged air intakes. Engineered in a wide variety of solutions to seal off liquid and air from hose connections, they provide more clamping force than the WDHC and can expand and contract under extreme temperatures to provide an ultra-secure seal.

Advantages:

  • Exacting fit, form and function
  • Provides an even distribution of sealing pressure
  • Corrosion resistant in harsh environments

Applications:

  • Passenger vehicle
  • Commercial vehicle
  • Industrial

Constant Torque Hose Clamps

Another clamp frequently found in automotive and industrial applications is the constant pressure or constant torque hose clamp. There are many varieties of these clamps from a spring style to worm drive hose clamps and T-Bolts. These are used in situations where there is a wide temperature swing of the part being clamped, like what happens in cooling systems. Because the clamp can expand and contract by itself, it does a great job sealing hoses, re-tensioning during temperature changes and helping prevent ‘cold-flow’ leaks.

Advantages:

  • Automatic re-tensioning during temperature changes
  • Enhanced sealing reliability regardless of temperature

Applications:

  • Passenger vehicle
  • Commercial vehicle
  • Industrial

Lined Clamps

A lined clamp features a smooth inner lining. It is designed to have minimal impact on the clamped hose and provide more actual clamping area for a perfect seal, making them ideal for silicone coolant hoses as well.

Advantages:

  • Added protection for hoses susceptible to damage or corrosion
  • Minimal impact on hose

Applications:

  • Passenger vehicle
  • Commercial vehicle
  • Powersports
  • Industrial

V-Band Clamps

V-Band clamps are for fast, secure, high-strength coupling for connecting flanged joints in the auto, pools/boats/rec and industrial industries, from cars to pools.

In the heavy-duty market and performance vehicle market, V-Band style clamps are very common. The V-Band clamp is a heavy-duty clamping method for flanged pipes of all kinds. Typically used in the HD market in exhausts and turbo installations, they are also found in many industrial applications because of the strength and integrity of the clamp’s connection.

Advantages:

  • High-strength joining with positive sealing integrity
  • Multiple latch styles
  • Corrosion resistant in harsh environments

Applications:

  • Passenger vehicle
  • Commercial vehicle
  • Industrial

Exhaust Clamps

You might be surprised to learn that NORMA offers more than a dozen different clamp styles to properly secure today’s automotive and heavy-duty exhaust systems. The V-Band, referenced above, is one type of exhaust clamp. The U-Bolt clamp is another style and is commonly used in simple exhaust connections on aftermarket replacement products. We also have the wide band clamp used to join larger exhaust pipes on performance exhaust systems. This clamp stretches to form a very tight leak-proof seal and is made for one-time use. We also feature band clamps that are reusable. These clamps spread the clamping force over a wide area so the pipe is not crushed. This makes it easy to disassemble exhaust parts with simple tools.

Advantages:

  • Superior clamp load capacity
  • Connections for overlapping pipes
  • Fast, easy and accurate installation

Applications:

  • Passenger vehicle
  • Commercial vehicle

Quick Connectors

Connectors are used to facilitate fast leak-proof assembly for all kinds of hoses, but most specifically to transport media in cooling water and heating applications. These are great solutions for reducing system weight and are often used in situations where temperatures and pressures rise and fall. NORMA provides a full line of lightweight yet extremely durable connecting products for fluid and air lines for passenger and commercial vehicles and numerous industrial applications.

Advantages:

  • Leak proof connections
  • Compatible with plastic, aluminum and steel tubes
  • Total system weight reduction

Applications:

  • Passenger vehicle
  • Commercial vehicle
  • Industrial

Mounting/Retaining Products

We have clips for pipes, cables, harnesses and other lines for the automotive and industrial markets. Our clips offer easy installation and secure fastening. Several styles feature reinforced band ends for extremely high mechanical loads.

Advantages:

  • Engineered to fit different sizes
  • Oval and round shape designs
  • Made from steel, plated steel, corrosion resistant and specialty steels

Applications:

  • Passenger vehicle
  • Commercial vehicle
  • Industrial

Pipe Couplings

When you need to connect both metal and plastic plain-ended pipes, our pipe couplings are a great solution. It’s a compact and reliable connection used in mechanical engineering, construction and shipbuilding applications.

At NORMA, we have the clamps and connectors you need to get the job done right.
